Why is Thrift T-100 ("Insta-Flo") drain cleaner recommended when Draino is not because it's been said to damage pipes?
Hello, I hope you're well.
As a homeowner, I generally use metal drain augers and plastic hair snake drain tools to declog my bathtub drain, which is often filled with long hair. I avoid drain cleaners like Draino because it's widely been said to damage pipes. (People who rent may use Draino because long-term harm to pipes does not directly affect them.)
I have seen many recommendations of Thrift T-100 Alkaline-based Granular Drain Cleaner, also known as Insta-Flo for better marketing and sold at more mainstream outlets. I've also read plumbers use Thrift T-100, whereas I assume it's very, very rare for plumbers to use Draino.
Is Thrift T-100 safe for pipes? (I live in a city and do not have a septic tank.) Both Thrift T-100 and Draino have sodium hydroxide (lye) as their main ingredients.
I'm not questioning the hivemind as much as I'm trying to learn. Thank you!
