new to septic tanks, soggy grass, water pooling above septic tank lid
Older home lived here just a couple of years, previous owner said he never pumped septic tank, just used the packets of bacteria made for them, and he didn't even know where the lid was.
Last time mowing the lawn I noticed the grass was very soggy in the area I would suspect the septic tank to be, but it was also in a slight depression in the ground, so I hoped it might just be run-off from the roof, as half the roofs drainage pipes lead to that area of the yard.
However, a week on now and hot dry weather and it's just gotten worse. I dug around in the muck and I found something man-made, a few inches underground, covered in plastic wrap. I haven't excavated at it further as it looks plastic and I didn't want to inadvertently damage it with the metal shovel. I assume it's the septic lid though.
Toilets are flushing fine, and the only water directed toward the septic system are the toilets, everything else runs to a ditch which runs to the ocean.
Should I just call someone to pump it out, or is this just a normal thing that happens periodically, we're all home over the summer on vacation so perhaps the system is just struggling more to keep up with it all (although last year it didn't have this problem..)?
