Can an Operation go too well? (Spoilers for Last Things Last)
I recently ran a group of two through Last Things Last, and they got through it relatively unscathed. Neither had ever played before, but their characters were both naturally suspicious and had high relevant skills. They never opened the septic tank, and never really trusted Marlene's words, as they read Baughman's letter before finding the tank.
They devised a clever plan in which they uncovered the main drainage pipe leading to the tank, and used that to deliver the gasoline, lighting the trail of gas going down the pipe to ignite it. I thought that was reasonable, so I allowed them to do it. They took SAN damage as described in the scenario for killing Marlene while not trusting her, and that was that.
I know LTL has fewer moving parts than most scenarios, and I don't regret my ruling, but I have a question for other Handlers: if and when your Agents' planning and rolls bypass a good chunk of a scenario's intended challenge, do you let the horror of the investigation and SAN loss therein speak for itself? Or do you add an element on the fly to keep the tension raised?
