1972-Mark Moseley Gets Flushed Out of Football

It was only Week 2 in the third season of young place kicker Mark Mosley’s career when he found himself in the office of his Oilers head coach, Bill Peterson. A call to the coach after the first game almost never means he wants to privately congratulate you on your stellar performance. Sure enough, Peterson informed a stunned Mosley, “I had a dream that you were on waivers, so you know what I did? I waved you.”

Just like that, the 24 year old kicker had washed right out of the NFL after only 27 games. With no other career ambitions, Mosley spent the next two years home in Texas building septic tanks for a living. He kept kicking though and eventually opportunity came knocking. He won the starting job for George Allen’s Redskins and enjoyed one of the most successful careers of all time. The last straight-on kicker even won league MVP in 1982 and kicked the Skins to a Superbowl XVII victory over Miami.
