Question about septic tanks

Hello. I have a question about septic systems that may seem naive so thank you for your patience. We moved out to Suffolk County from Nassau County and I'm getting familiar with the needs of maintaining our septic system. I've always lived in a house with a sewer connection and honestly never thought twice about the drain pipes. I have no issue with maintaining the bacteria and we had a local pumper take some solids out and do a once over. We have an average system in OK shape.

My question is regarding the following: we discovered that the previous owners ran some rubber hose from the laundry machine and from the dishwasher out to the rear of the house and left it under the wood deck, for it to spill out onto the dirt. Obviously they were thinking that they didn't want to send this Wastewater into the septic system for whatever reason. There's a stew of water and mud under there and it's disgusting and unsanitary.

I asked around at work and the guys all said that nobody on long Island sends their laundry water to the septic tank and basically everyone said to just bury a drywell in the back yard to collect the laundry water. Is this kosher? I have a feeling that its not. Isn't the point of the system to pre-treat this water before discharging into the ground?

What are your experiences with this sort of thing? Should I tie these pipes into the regular septic tank or do as the guys say and bury a small drywall?
