Oil tank and boiler on their way out, looking for alternatives to heat water and heat the house.

House I’m currently under contract with is about 1500 sq feet. 3 bedrooms on the main floor and the basement is half finished walk out where the other half is a two car garage.

Currently it has oil fired boiler that provides residential hot water as well as hydronic baseboard. The oil tank and boiler both are at end of life and need to be replaced. I could just replace them both and keep oil and the existing systems, but Im interested in alternative options.

It’s in Connecticut where electricity is expensive (fuck Eversource) and so is oil (fuck that too). I’m on private well and septic and no municipal gas I can hook up to. The house also doesn’t have any existing ductwork

I’m weighting:

1) keep oil, everything works as it is.

2) convert to propane, maybe burns a bit cleaner, price might be about the same depending on propane sourcing and tank leases, plus added possibility of a gas range in the kitchen or easily adding in a standby generator

3) some sort of heat pump system so i can have heat and ac, thought the heat may not be enough in the winter and I’ll still have to have another solution for hot water (preferably not oil since that would revert me to option 1). Whether it’s individual units around the house or I run some ducts in the attic and have a central unit.

I think that’s likely is I keep oil or go to propane as primary, until a few years down the line I put in some mini splits, mostly for the AC, but also to serve as the primary heat in the winter.
