Homesteading without the Home

I'm poor.

And yet, growing my own food forest sounds like what I most want to be doing, if not one of the best investments I could be making in myself and the planet. The scheme I'm considering is this: spend my savings on some undeveloped land and getting plants in the ground on camping trips. Then, down the line, if its ten or twenty years, I put down a trailor or tiny home or whatever, but by then at least I could have some decent-sized bushes or even trees producing, along with enough staples to feed at least myself and my partner. I've worried about hunger in the past and--never again. We might be quasi-homeless living with relatives in the meantime, but worst-case scenario, I think I'd rather be homeless on my own land surrounded by raspberries, garlic, and potatoes than in a shelter among scary strangers.

My questions are:

  • Does this sound at all feasible?
  • If it is, what steps would be necessary for someone ignorant of real estate to follow through with such a scheme?
  • How could I get started making detailed plans?
  • What resources would I require on site? A well? A septic tank? An electricity hook-up or solar panel?

For context: I can't leave Ontario due to non-transferable provincial benefits, and a highly favorable rent freeze, at least until they tear the place down. I'm looking to buy in the Leeds and the Thousand Islands area because it's the only local jurisdiction I'm aware of that allows for tiny homes--and I'd love to be walking or biking distance from a swimming lake.
